Smartphone, Tablet, and Wearable OEMs, as well as application developers are targeting a near-term future where our mobile devices are always aware of our surroundings and activity, and providing meaningful results and content based on that. Called Always-on Context Awareness, this is delivered through the computation and fusion of data from numerous sensors located within a mobile device. Complicating this, however, is the computation power consumption typically required to run the necessary algorithms. Application processors, as well as existing microcontroller- and ASSP-based sensor hubs, are not capable of delivering these capabilities at the ≤2% system power levels required to enable always-on functionality.

QuickLogic’s Always-On Context Aware Sensor Hub is the first solution capable of delivering always-on context awareness at the power levels required in mobile devices. The solution is based on the ArcticLink 3 S1 Sensor Hub platform, and contains a number of QuickLogic PSB (Proven System Block) technologies, including Communications Manager, Flexible Fusion Engine, and Sensor Manager.
The device will autonomously manage and sample data from multiple sensors including the typical 9-axis motion sensors (accelerometer, magnetometer, and gyroscope), as well as other sensors such as ambient light, temperature, pressure, etc. The device also contains Sensor Platform Inc’s “FreeMotion” library, which includes a context change detector, diversity check, and step counter. This off-the-shelf solution enables OEMs to immediately integrate best-in-class context awareness and motion sensor fusion algorithms into their devices quickly. By offloading the context change detection to the QuickLogic solution, the application processor is kept asleep longer, and only woken when the sensor hub detects a change in context. This enables the most power-efficient architecture.
