QuickLogic Adds DVD ROM Support to Its Programmable IDE Companion Device

  • The IDE Companion Device provides control and interface functionality for mass storage adoption in portable electronics
  • Enhanced companion device now supports simultaneous DVD ROM and Hard Disk Drive capability at greater than 13 MB/s throughput

QuickLogic Corporation (NASDAQ: QUIK), the lowest power programmable logic leader, today announced native DVD ROM support for its IDE companion device. Based on QuickLogic’s ultra-low power programmable technology, the IDE companion device provides control and interface capability between embedded processors and both IDE-based Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) and DVD ROM drives. Additionally, the IDE companion device now supports dual IDE/ATA-based devices with one master and one slave that can simultaneously interface to one DVD ROM and one HDD.

There are multitudes of popular, low power embedded processors designed into handheld, battery-powered applications; however, many do not provide a native interface to standard storage peripherals such as IDE-based HDDs or DVD ROM drives. QuickLogic, with its integrated IDE controller, provides an easy-to-implement, energy-efficient solution.

“The gaming and movie industries have created tremendous demand for DVD ROM drives in computers, portable multimedia players and other portable video game consoles,” said Brian Faith, Senior Director of Marketing of QuickLogic. “To address the demand for these types of high volume consumer electronic products and to provide increased flexibility for designers of these systems, we have expanded the functionality of our IDE companion device so that our customers can design for both HDD and optical drives simultaneously.”

The embedded IDE controller can perform transfers to or from an IDE/ATA-based HDD and DVD-ROM in any of the PIO modes (0, 1, 2, 3 or 4). In addition, HDDs can also be accessed using Multi-Word DMA modes (0, 1, or 2). This IDE companion device has integrated bi-directional sector buffers, which directly contributes to a demonstrated performance of greater than 13MBytes/s data transfers. The IDE/ATA timing and registers are completely handled by the QuickLogic device, further reducing the processor’s bus utilization and enabling more energy-efficient operation.

Pricing and Availability

The IDE and DVD-ROM controller and Windows® CE software drivers are available now with unit pricing starting at $5. More information on this solution can be found at www.quicklogic.com/hdd. The Mobile Application Board that supports this IDE companion device is also available now, and is currently priced at $999. For more information on the MAB, visit www.quicklogic.com/mab.
