QuickLogic Announces µWatt Programmable Bridge for the Intel® PXA2XX Processor Line

  • Ultra Low Power Programmable Bridge enables rapid adoption of emerging technologies not natively supported by the Intel® PXA2XX Family of processors
  • Proven solution reduces risk, improves time to market and reduces development costs

QuickLogic Corporation (Nasdaq: QUIK), a pioneer of Embedded Standard Products and µWatt FPGAs, announced their first in a series of µWatt Programmable Bridges optimized for Intel® PXA2XX Processor line based on the Intel XScale® microarchitecture. The QuickPCI-based bridge solution enables designers to expand the Intel XScale® microarchitecture’s native peripheral set to communicate with PCI–based peripherals, such as Wi-Fi, Ultra Wideband and USB2.0. Applications such as Handheld GPS, Portable Medical, VoWLAN PDAs and Smartphones stand to benefit from QuickLogic’s industry leading low power technology.

In addition to the bridge, QuickLogic has developed a complete Wi-Fi solution that includes a Daughtercard that plugs seamlessly into Intel® PXA270-based Processor Developer’s Kit (“Mainstone” DVK) and a complete Board Support Package (BSP) for the Linux operating system. The Daughtercard connects easily into the VLIO connector of the DVK, allowing designers to make system architecture tradeoffs including power consumption, performance and cost. This improves developers’ time to market and eliminates risk. QuickLogic currently plans to support the Windows CE and Windows Mobile operating systems in the future.

“The Intel® PXA2XX Processor line is clearly gaining massive support in high-growth, mobile consumer applications,” said Kevin Yee, QuickLogic’s Director of Business Development. “Our companion solution provides the unique combination of system performance at very low power, a void left unaddressed by traditional FPGA and CPLD solutions.”

“The connectivity that QuickLogic’s programmable bridge provides allows us to address emerging markets with our existing embedded processors,” said Scott Dunagan, Intel’s Director of Marketing. “In particular, it addresses the near-term opportunity presented by the broad availability of 802.11a/b/g chipsets for portable and handheld consumer market segments such as VoWLAN phones, games and medical devices.”

The release of this µWatt programmable bridge solution represents the first step towards providing low power connectivity between the Intel® PXA2XX Family of processors and a host of emerging networking, storage and media processing technologies that target portable and handheld markets.
