Frame Recycler

Frame Recycler conserves battery life by allowing the CPU to shut down when display content is unchanged

While mobile consumer device displays are required to be refreshed at up to 60 times per second, quite often the actual displayed content does not change at the same rate. A perfect example is the LCD or OLED-based tablet or E-reader — while the screen content may not change for seconds or even minutes at a time, the CPU typically provides identical content updates to the display. This architecture is highly inefficient from a power handling perspective because the same frames are sent repeatedly.

QuickLogic’s Frame Recycler PSB solves this issue by removing display refresh responsibilities from the CPU when no change in display content is present, allowing the CPU to operate in a power-down state until the next change of display content is requested.

Frame Recycler is applicable to many consumer devices, from e-readers to tablet computers, smartphones, notebooks, and other devices. Frame Recycler technology is available as a QuickLogic Proven System Block (PSB) option in the ArcticLink® II VX solution platform families of product.

QuickLogic 's Frame Recycler transforms the consumer device experience by:

  • Storing a single frame of video (up to 1024 x 1024) and continually recycling that frame to the display up to 60 FPS
  • Allows CPU to operate in a power-down state until a display change is desired, potentially saving considerable system power and processing resources
