In today’s mobile-dominated world, devices like smartphones and tablet have supplanted televisions and even notebook computers as the medium of choice for viewing multimedia content like movies, images, and gaming. Content providers like movie studios and television broadcast networks are continually expanding their digital offerings, while mobile content portals such as Hulu, YouTube, and iTunes see continued increases in site traffic and bandwidth consumption seemingly every month. Yet, even with the amount of content available growing dramatically, mobile device users are often still disappointed with the visual experience on mobile devices, particularly in the area of multimedia viewing.
Even with continued advancements, mobile display technology still falls very short in terms of providing a great viewing experience in all lighting conditions, particularly in environments such as direct sunlight. This is primarily due to the fact that mobile display technologies still fall short in terms of possessing adequate contrast ratio for viewing high quality multimedia content. Mobile displays simply do not have the contrast ratio that our eyes have come to expect, as most of us are used to viewing content on large screen, high quality televisions and computers. Furthermore, most content is captured and processed with the intention of being viewed on high contrast mediums in low ambient light - such as in a movie theater. Multimedia content with high contrast viewed on a low contrast display will appear dull and gray, and details will be lost. QuickLogic’s Visual Enhancement Engine HD+ (VEE HD+) addresses these issues, allowing sunlight viewability of smartphones and tablets using existing display technology.
QuickLogic's proprietary VEE HD+ technology, available on the ArcticLink II VX and ArcticLink III VX platform of CSSP devices, greatly enhances the users viewing experience by optimizing the contents dynamic range, contrast, and color saturation based on a scientific model of the human visual system. VEE technology accepts video data from the host processor/CPU, and by using data provided by an on-board ambient light sensor, optimizes video data pixel-by-pixel, frame-by-frame, to provide a natural viewing experience under any display brightness or in any ambient lighting condition. This means that regardless of how content changes (light to dark, high to low contrast, highly color saturated to matte), or where the user is viewing the content (dark room, bright sunlight, mixed lighting), a mobile device containing VEE HD+ will always produce a top quality viewing experience. This means no more waiting to view content, and a continued high degree of user satisfaction.
VEE HD+ technology works with commonly-used mobile display technology, including LCD, OLED, AMOLED, and SuperLCD displays. Additionally, VEE HD+ can be implemented to greatly increase the effective lumen experience of pico projectors.
VEE HD+ works hand-in-hand with QuickLogic's DPO HD+ to achieve significant battery savings along with improving viewability of mobile displays.
